December 2008 Newsletter

A Newsletter for all the good Barron County citizens participating in the tax reform effort!

In addition to the posted November newsletter, the Cart team recently held a special meeting concerning the website and a proposal on enhancing the information to our membership with more timely updates concerning the activities of the county board in relation to our efforts on tax issues. In that venue, we plan to update the site at least on a bi-monthly basis to keep our membership current on all issues. We also encourage the participation of our membership in contributions to the site with any information or concerns that you would like our membership to view . Because we have certain constraints dealing with material that can or cannot be legally posted due to copyright laws, it will be required that any material submitted for the website must be sent to co-chairman, Jim Simon, for board review and approval. The address is on the CART website home page and included as contact information in this letter.

CART membership dues for 2009 are due by January 31st and should be sent to Bonnie Peterson in the amount of $10.00 per member. Please make your check payable to CART and send to Bonnie at the following address:

We will not be holding our annual membership renewal and chicken dinner in January of 2009 due to past low turnout and unpredictable weather. In lieu of this change, we plan to hold a picnic event in either late spring or summer for our membership and hope to see all of you in attendance. The newsletter and website will post the details when we finalize this activity.

Our CART team is presently involved with meetings concerning the Comprehensive Plan or Smart Growth program that the county has subscribed to with the state of Wisconsin in developing a plan for Barron county. The plan must be submitted prior to January 2010 and must meet certain points of criteria that will ultimately affect our tax payers in concerns for their property rights and land usage. The next scheduled public meeting will be held on December 3rd at 7:00 PM at the county courthouse which was recently renamed the Barron County Government Center.. It is extremely important that our landowners attend this meeting and future meetings to express their concerns on property rights protections. The scope of this plan is massive and needs everyone's attention. We encourage our members to share their concerns by either attending one of the meetings or sending your comments to co-chairman Jim Simon. He will compile the information and express those concerns with the Comprehensive Planning Commission on your behalf.

While CART was involved in many activities throughout 2008, the most significant affecting taxes, was the Chetek School District referendum. CART's involvement was primarily in disseminating accurate information of the actual cost of this referendum, (which was not made clear in the published proposal). Our efforts consisted of door to door dissemination of materials explaining the true cost in the School Tax Levy. This was followed by an article in the Chetek Alert, to insure that all citizens within the district would know what the referendum would cost them in additional property tax dollars. Through our efforts, the referendum was soundly defeated, but we anticipate its return in the next election cycle and we will remain watchful. If you have an issue with a proposed increase in property tax within your Township, City or School District that you feel CART should be aware of, you may contact us and we will look into the matter. It is the reason for our existence.

CART members continue to attend the County and Executive Board meetings to remain current on issues that may ultimately affect the tax levy. It is our hope that a greater amount of citizens would attend these meetings to insure the Boards awareness of citizen concerns. The County Board Meeting calendar for 2009 is included in this newsletter and we would love to see you there.

Our next CART meeting will be held in Almena at the VFW on January 6th at 7:00 PM. May we wish all of you a most Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
