March 2010 Newsletter

A Newsletter for all the good Barron County citizens participating in the tax reform effort!
Although we haven’t had much news to report since the holidays, I assure you that your CART team has been busy with some activities that will hopefully enhance the information we provide to our membership. In the monthly meeting we held in January, our present board …….. your CART team, was re-elected to serve you in 2010. The election of officers include Bonnie Peterson as treasurer, Diane Leff as our secretary and Lee Peterson will co-chair with me for the remainder of this year. We also have some very fine regular members that have signed up for duty in attendance to our county board and executive board meetings. We encourage other members to also attend these meetings as well as our regular CART meetings. We are a show of force and our presence at county board meetings is well noted and a venue in which we plan to continue.
The website has updated information on the history of property tax collections for the past fifteen years as a result of meetings with Don Buerkley, Ray Johnson, myself and the county administrator. We provide this information and take pride in noting that with CART’s direct involvement, we have been able in previous years in keeping these tax costs to our taxpayers at a lower rate than if we had not been involved. CART is also now affiliated with AFP (Americans For Prosperity) and CRG (Citizens for Responsible Government) which are known state-wide and have a vast membership here in Wisconsin. AFP has organized several of the Tea Party gatherings and many of the members of CART have been in attendance and will continue to be present for these events.
The Barron county budget concerns for 2010 and beyond are not looking very good. As usual, the county is looking for ways to cut back on health care costs which are skyrocketing and will eventually outweigh wage costs if the trend continues. We have offered suggestions and will continue to work with the county in doing whatever it takes to keep our tax costs at a minimum and encourage a zero based balanced budget despite opposing comments from the county board chair and several of the supervisors. The notion in all forms of government control has always been to spend what they have and if they need more, simply raise taxes. Our message is that enough is enough and we aren’t going to take it anymore. Learn to spend within your means just like we do at home with our families and our debt obligations. Nothing more and nothing less. In that concern, we hope our membership will also contact their elected officials in county, state and federal offices and express your feelings as well. Also remind them of the elections later this year for those that are up for re-election and cast your ballot accordingly.
Our website is being updated with this newsletter to enhance easier access to documents, affiliations, charts and pertinent information for our membership. As always, we welcome your comments and look forward to membership participation in our goal of encouraging managed spending in Barron county.
