May 2007 C.A.R.T. Meeting Minutes

May 1, 2007
7:00 p.m. - Almena VFW
There were 8 members in attendance: Lee, Bonnie, Larry, Diane, Vince, Phyllis, Ray W, and Jim Simon.
Lee Peterson called the meeting to order. There were no changes or corrections to last month's minutes. There was a motion and 2nd to approve the minutes. The motion carried.
Bonnier Peterson gave the treasurers report. We currently have $1,449.66 in our account. There was a motion and 2nd to approve the treasurer's report. The motion carried.
Lee asked for discussion on the Mission Statement written by Roy Bannister. Larry handed out copies to review. Larry suggested the Mission Statement discussion be tabled since Roy was not in attendance. Seconded by Jim Simon.
Lee asked for an update of a forum presentation by Jeff Wood. Larry said he left messages with Jeff's office but has not heard back from them yet. He will call Jeff Wood Again. Larry talked about the governor's new budget, which appears to keep the property tax, freeze in place but adds lots and lots of service fees and charges. Frank Lasee's notes include good information about the state budget. Contact Larry for more information about Frank's notes.
Continuing membership for another year with CRG (Citizens for Responsible Government) was discussed. Everyone felt it was a worthwhile cause as CRG helps to get candidates elected that feel the way we do. A motion was made to send the $100 membership to CRG. The motion carried.
No one was able to attend the latest County Board Executive Meeting, but Lee felt it is still a good idea if someone from the group can attend.
Lee read a letter from Vickie Erickson stating she's not longer available to attend regular meetings due to her job requirements and felt someone else should be recording secretary. Everyone appreciated what she had done for us and asked Lee and Bonnie to send Vickie a thank you card for her past service.
CART Newsletters were the next topic of discussion. All felt that regular contact with members through newsletters was a good idea, maybe 3 or 4 times a year. There was discussion on who might future newsletters and Jim Simon said he would work to help write some of them. The idea of different members writing articles about topics they are working on would be good. Articles are to be turned in at the June meeting to be compiled into the next newsletter. Larry and Diane would again print and send out the final copies. Lee suggested the next newsletter go out in September when the County is working on next years budget.
Big spending for the county was discussed and Ray Wintrone feels that we need to call our Supervisors any time a spending issue is over $1 million. The newsletter could also include Mr. Hebert's phone number to information on how to contact the individual supervisors.
The current "Veterans" situation was talked about. Larry informed the group that the new Veterans Committee is only a temporary appointment so the Vet's can sit down the County Board representatives to resolve the conflict. After that, the Veterans Committee will be dissolved. Vince thought the old Veterans Committee was being re-established and said he would update the Veterans.
Lee asked if anyone had any future agenda items. Jim suggested the CART should sponsor a Candidates debate between County Board Supervisors running for election next year. Also a possibility was to have a debate between Dari McDonald and Tom Richie if they throw their hat into the ring for Mary Hubler's seat. The candidates would be able to state their platform for running and answer questions prepared by CART members. This will be considered when the time is appropriate.
The next meeting is scheduled for June 5th, NO MEETING IN JULY and another meeting on August 7th.
With no further business to discuss there was a motion and second to adjourn the meeting. Motion carried.
Diane Leff, filling in for Secretary
